Tumblr: posting rules and settings
What a Tumblr channel accepts in Posty: media, limits, required fields, and the fields of the settings object for the API.
Basics
tumblrPost types
The same channel accepts more than one kind of post, and each kind has different requirements. The table shows what you need for each.
| Type | Media | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Text | none | A blank line starts a new text block. |
| Photos | up to 30 images | The alt text from the media library goes with each image. |
| Video | 1 MP4 video | No extra notes. |
Rules
- You connect by signing in with Tumblr and allowing Posty to post. Then you pick the blog. Each blog is its own channel.
- Posty publishes the post at the scheduled time. It does not use the Tumblr queue or drafts.
- The text goes out as Tumblr text blocks: a blank line starts a new block, and a block longer than 4096 characters is split.
- The alt text of an image in the media library is sent with the image.
Settings fields
These fields go into the post's settings object, alongside the __type field. In the UI, you fill in the same ones in the channel's settings section.
| Field | Type | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| title | string, 1 to 4096 characters | no | A heading at the top of the post. |
| link | string, URL | no | A link block after the text. |
| sourceUrl | string, URL | no | The source URL of the post. |
| tags | string, up to 4096 characters | no | Tags, separated with commas. |
Examples
Each example is one item in the POST /public/v1/posts request's posts array. The envelope around it is always this:
{
"type": "schedule",
"date": "2026-09-15T09:00:00.000Z",
"shortLink": false,
"posts": [ /* the item below */ ]
}Text post with a title and tags
All four settings fields are optional.
{
"integration": { "id": "<tumblr-channel>" },
"value": [{ "content": "<p>Five things we learned this year.</p>", "image": [] }],
"settings": {
"__type": "tumblr",
"title": "Five things we learned",
"tags": "five-things, year-in-review",
"link": "https://example.com/blog/five-things"
}
}The channel ID comes from the channel list, and the path values for images and videos from media upload. The exact schema for the connected account comes from the settings schema endpoint. From the command line, the same thing is the --settings flag. See the CLI examples.
